On September 23, 2024, the "Ninth (2024) Camel Industry Development Conference and Agricultural and Pastoral Harvest Festival", a series of activities in China for the International Year of Camelids jointly organized by the China Animal Husbandry Association and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Representative Office in China, was grandly held in Kalpin County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. More than 500 industry representatives from all over the country attended the conference. Kong Weixiong, secretary of the Party Committee of Kalpin County, delivered a welcome speech. He expressed his welcome to the holding of this conference in Kalpin. In her speech, Han Yan, acting representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Representative Office in China, said. 2024 is the "International Year of Camelids" established by the United Nations. The theme is "Desert and Highland Heroes: Supporting Livelihood Development and Carrying Cultural Heritage", aiming to prompt all parties to recognize the untapped potential of camelids, calling for increased investment in the field of camelids, and advocating strengthening research, capacity building and adopting innovative practices and technologies. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is responsible for promoting various related activities of the "International Year of Camelids" globally. Wang Jun, director of the Second Office of Standards of the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, interpreted the "National Food Safety Standard for Milk Powder and Formula Milk Powder": The promulgation of the new standard will meet the needs of the people for characteristic dairy and livestock products on the basis of ensuring national food safety, help standardize the healthy development of milk powder and better protect the rights and interests of consumers. The theme of this conference is "Building the camel industry chain in an all-round way and leading the high-quality development of the camel industry". The industry forum closely focused on the theme and conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges through special reports and interactive forums. Zhang Wenbin, consultant of the Camel Branch of the China Animal Husbandry Association and vice president of the Inner Mongolia Camel Research Institute, presided over the keynote report. Sun Feizhou, director of the Livestock and Poultry Resources Department of the National Animal Husbandry Service Station, gave a report on "Doing a good job in the examination and approval of new varieties of livestock and poultry and the identification of genetic resources to provide strong support for the revitalization of the seed industry." Hasusurong from Inner Mongolia Agricultural University gave a report on "The protective effect and mechanism of camel whey protein on liver and kidney damage caused by acute heat stress." Zhang Quanlong from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University gave a report on "The functional components of camel milk and its medical and health care functions research." Yang Hui, associate professor of the Medical College of Qinghai University, gave a report on "Related research on camel milk-derived exosomes protecting the intestinal barrier." Professor Yibi from the College of Animal Science of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University gave a report on "Metagenome of camel intestinal microorganisms and feed formula research for milk camels in China." Professor Meng He from Shanghai Jiao Tong University gave a report on "Design and production of breeding software and genome chips for Bactrian camels." After the conference, there were continuous wonderful events on site, including camel-themed literary and artistic performances, camel beauty pageants, farmers and herdsmen's fun sports meetings, camel riding experiences, the galloping of tens of thousands of camels, and exhibitions and sales of characteristic agricultural and sideline products. These rich and colorful activities not only demonstrated the vigorous development of the camel industry but also provided an excellent platform for people to understand camel culture. In recent years, Xinjiang has obvious advantages and broad prospects in the development of the camel industry. Here, the natural conditions are unique. The vast grasslands and suitable climate provide a high-quality growth environment for camels. The abundant natural grassland resources help produce high-quality camel products. The ethnic culture has a profound background. Camels play an important role in ethnic minority cultures, endowing the camel industry with unique cultural charm, increasing the added value of products and promoting integration with cultural tourism. In the future, the camel industry in Xinjiang is expected to become an important force in promoting local economic development and increasing farmers' incomes.
